5. Prediction of violence and sexual violence using
actuarial instruments
The Violence Risk Appraisal Guide (VRAG),
The Sexual Offences Risk Appraisal Guide(SORAG)
The prediction of serious reoffending is of great
importance to professionals working in many fields
(psychology, psychiatry, social work, nursing, law,
etc.).
Over the past decade a number of instruments have
been developed that aid in the prediction of such
serious offences.
In this course we shall cover two related
instruments: the Violence Risk Appraisal Guide
(VRAG) and the Sexual Offences Risk Appraisal Guide
(SORAG).
We are also happy to discuss and give examples of
other instruments such as the OGRS-II and COVR.
In the course you will cover:
• How to score the individual items of the VRAG and
SORAG
• How to interpret the scores
• How the instruments were developed and the
evidence-base that supports their efficacy
• Case vignettes to practice scoring and
interpretation
• The strengths and limitations of actuarial risk
instruments
The course is a 1-day workshop that includes lunch
and refreshments. Attendance is open to
professionals from a wide range of disciplines.
